A Must Read! by Ken Moses, Ph.D.
The Impact of Childhood Disability: The Parent's Struggle

Excerpts from Dr. Moses' article  "... As disability bluntly shatters the dreams, parents face a complicated, draining, challenging, frightening, and consuming task. They must raise the child they have, while letting go of the child they dreamed of. They must go on with their lives, cope with their child as he or she is now, let go of the lost dreams, and generate new dreams. To do all this, the parent must experience the process of grieving.  ... The culturally rejected feeling states of denial, anxiety, fear. depression, guilt, and anger may be used in surprisingly positive ways when the feelings are fully shared. ... experiencing and sharing the pain is the solution, not the problem. ..."

Welcome to Shannon's website. My name is Mary and I am mom to three beautiful girls and wife to my best friend, Larry.  This site is devoted to our youngest daughter, Shannon, who was born on Bastille Day, July 14, 1998 with a rare brain disorder called Polymicrogyria (PMG).  I've put together this website to share information about Shannon with family, friends and other parents who have a child diagnosed with this disorder. Thanks for stopping by and reading about our precious little one. She's a great joy to us and also a great challenge, but we love her just the same.

If you have a child or a relative diagnosed with Polymicrogyria (or a similar neuronal migration disorder) and are looking for information and support, please feel free to join the Polymicrogyria email group.  The people there are a wonderful life line of support and information for me and my family.  Another great source of information can be found at the  Lissencephaly Launch Pad.  It contains loads of information relating to PMG.

Best wishes, Mary
